Automotive radar sensors by InnoSenT – on the road to success in driver assistance systems worldwide
In Donnersdorf in the centre of Germany, we have specialised in the development and series production of radar sensors since our founding in 1999. The automotive sector is our most important pillar next to the industrial area. In the growth market of radar applications in vehicles, we occupy a leading position with our customer-specific solutions.
Together with our cooperative partner HELLA, a globally positioned and renowned automotive supplier, we are even more innovative and efficient. Working together, InnoSenT and HELLA use synergies and will continue to operate as independent companies. The mutual strategic goal: The market leadership in the automotive radar business.
Effective arguments for driver assistance systems using radar sensor technology
- Precise, clear-cut measurement - independent of outer influences
Radar sensors are distinguished by the very good measurement and separability of relative speeds. In this way, a radar system can measure distances accurately and easily separate several targets such as, e.g. vehicles, guardrails or people from each other and track their movement.
While optical systems like infra-red, lidar or cameras are dependent on good visibility, this is of no importance to radar sensor technology. Here the environment is determined touch-free, using electromagnetic waves – unrestricted by darkness, rain, snow, fog or contamination. Also quickly changing lighting conditions like, e.g. when driving through a tunnel are not a problem for radar systems.
- Market trend: Radar systems with think for themselves and actively intervene
The constant increase in traffic density requires ever greater requirements in road traffic safety. Conventional driver assistance systems with radar inform and warn drivers of special hazardous situations. More advanced systems based on radar, automatically intervene in the vehicle control.
Adaptive Cruise Control - ACC is a widespread system using intervention automation. With this radar application in the front area, the vehicle constantly adapts its speed to the vehicle ahead according to the driver's wish. That means that the vehicle accelerates and brakes automatically. The market trend is reflected in the internal dynamics of the system. While the driver has retains the responsibility at all times in conventional systems and can "override" the electronic assistant by his own actions, assistant systems are increasingly coming on the market which automatically spring into action without the driver's input.
Thus, these systems can, e.g. initiate emergency braking to avoid an accident or deny the driver certain steering actions in hazardous situations like, e.g. a lane change. The generation of the actively intervening driver assistants places high requirements on the reliability and quality of the radar sensor technology - product properties which InnoSenT guarantees to a high degree.
We support our customers and partners through sound and individual consultation, technical competence and, in the development, with development process in conformance with the ISO-TS 16949 - including requirements in ISO-26262.
- Cost trends: Radar applications are becoming more and more economical
Today, the things which, in the past, were a luxury for medium-sized and small car classes or not even available, are now commonplace in the automotive world. The rapid increase of drive assistance systems is driven by the high-volume markets. In established markets in any case but also increasingly in the markets with a big future - the emerging markets.
With our 24 GHz radar sensors which we produce in large quantities, we can quickly and economically service the high-volume segment. We, of course, design for higher frequency ranges - from 61GHz to 77 GHz and up to 122 GHz.
