Donnersdorf, 13/02/2022. The German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is driving research with the aim of modernising traffic along German waterways and promoting progress in this area. The vision is for ships to utilise Germany’s inland waterways in a new and efficient way. In this process, in December 2022, the starting shot for the II-RADAR-SOW project was fired – with the goal of developing an innovative sensor network and testing its use for ships in digital testing areas along federal waterways.
With the radar company InnoSenT GmbH, the Institute of Communications and Navigation of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), as well as the Chair of Electronic Systems and Sensors at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg all involved, competent technology experts with many years of experience are jointly taking on this task.
The project partners are researching the development of an Intelligent Industrial RADAR (II-RADAR) sensor network in the digital testing area along the Spree-Oder Waterway (SOW). As part of the collaboration, the research team is evaluating high-resolution radar sensor networks that seamlessly record the close-range area of inland waterway vessels, from just a few centimetres away to a distance of approx. 200 m. The resulting system is meant to employ high-precision environmental modelling in order to enable manoeuvres to be carried out autonomously, such as entering a lock, crossing bridges, and berthing the ship.
The German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) is supporting the research project as part of their funding directive for the research and development of digital testing areas along federal waterways. The project was started on 16/12/2022 and the expected research time is two years.
