Donnersdorf, 09/02/2023. Autonomous driving relies on advanced sensor systems for detecting the environment. A tried-and-tested technology for this purpose is radar. In order to make self-driving cars safer and more efficient, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is supporting development projects for AI-based electronic solutions. One of them was the KI-Radar project, started on 01/08/2019. It was devoted to the goal of optimising radar sensors’ resolution using artificial intelligence. In October 2022, the partners involved successfully completed their joint research activities. The project was another important step in making novel, autonomous mobility apt for use by the broad public.
The KI-Radar project developed a high-resolution radar system for autonomous driving. The progress being made in radar technology allows increasingly high-resolution antenna architectures to be developed for more precise environmental detection. In order to efficiently implement this further development, various systems and electronic components must interact reliably. Artificial intelligence methods are used to optimise performance.
The AI algorithms employed enable different sensors in the vehicle to be coupled in real time to significantly improve the resolution. The enhanced environmental resolution allows dangers to be detected early on and makes the function more reliable. The measured values of the individual systems are fused together in decentralised processing. In addition, the system has an innovative and space-saving 3D antenna structure that contributes to miniaturising the product and extending the coverage range.
Qualified specialists from a wide variety of disciplines at renowned institutions and companies worked together to carry out the research work. The project partners InnoSenT GmbH, KSG GmbH, Creonic GmbH, the University of Bielefeld, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) jointly achieved significant progress in furthering the efficiency and safety of autonomous driving. The radar technology company InnoSenT took on the role of the network coordinator and contributed its many years of experience in automotive radar development. In January 2023, the experts involved met for a final presentation in Donnersdorf.
